Social Media Marketing Terms and Meanings
If the competition is doing it, you should be too, only better. With the ever growing sources of media marketing online, it can be hard to keep up with everything, let alone sort through the many terms and Internet jargon that comes with it. However, once a person gets a grasp on the meanings of various terms and the purposes of the websites, the sky is the limit to this free marketing strategy.

Twitter is the most widely used form of social media. Use the Twitter website to set up a free account with a customizable background. Sync a phone number to this account, and “Tweets” can be sent to followers twenty-four hours a day. A Tweet is a type of status update. Businesses use these to announce one day sales, special events, or Twitter follower coupon codes. To increase your Twitter following, embed free twitter links onto your website allowing people to click and follow. Tweets can be received by text message or internet notification.
Blogs are another form of social media marketing that have some people confused. Though the term is relatively new, blogs have been around for years in the form of weblogs. A blog is a great place to create an Internet “home base.” This is the place that your Twitter account and all other accounts can link to in order to give people the most information about you or your business organization. These are relatively easy to set up, and people can choose to follow your blog through an RSS feed that automatically updates them when you post a new entry. You can also use Twitter to announce new entries, gaining more blog traffic and higher earnings possibilities.
Digg and StumbleUpon are other social networking sites that allow people to promote their stories, websites or videos. Digg users can “digg” an article to increase its popularity and viewership. StumbleUpon works similarly, with readers rating the best of the web. Once an article, webpage, or video is submitted to these sites, they can quickly become viral, meaning they gain exponentially compounding page views in a matter of hours. While press releases and videos are the most likely content to go viral, articles and blogs can also gain a lot of attention if marketed properly.
Facebook is another name that most people have heard, with a vast amount of the population having a Facebook account. This site has simplified applications that link friends together in communities, and allow for outside social networking sites like Twitter and Digg to send updates to your Facebook account. In essence, Tweets can be sent both to Twitter followers, and to an entire Facebook following, with advertising reaching hundreds, if not thousands of people within seconds.
The power that lies in social marketing is largely untapped by most people. When accounts are properly linked together, a target audience can be reached in a short amount of time, for free. While understanding the terms is essential, most social networking websites make it easy for users to operate their interfaces with as little difficulty as possible.
