Who Benefits from Affiliate Marketing?

Blog > E-Marketing > Affiliate Marketing Affiliate marketing offers an inexpensive way to raise awareness of products, services, and campaigns around the world.

So what is it and why is it so cheap? The purpose of an affiliate marketing program is to spread advertisements around the internet on different websites or blogs, or in emails that are sent to many recipients from web pages. People who wish to advertise in this way by setting up affiliate marketing programs will pay different webmasters to host their adverts. All this is usually arranged by an affiliate marketing network, which takes its cut as well. So these are the three groups of individuals and businesses that can benefit from the phenomenon: advertisers, the site owners who are their affiliates, and the affiliate networks.

Who Benefits from Affiliate Marketing?

For businesses, this has revolutionized their marketing, and how much can be achieved within their marketing budgets.

Advertising in print, radio or television has always been fiercely expensive, with limited target ranges. On the internet, it is still cost effective to have blanket coverage in many areas. For internet businesses, such as etsy shops, and many other small businesses, an affiliate marketing program is sometimes all the advertising they need. Even the biggies are in on the act.

Many networks offer advice on preparing the right advert and some will even do it for you. They also make it easy to monitor the effectiveness of your program, and adjust it accordingly.

Once your adverts are out there with the right keywords, the more clicks they receive, the more conversions you can expect. And the more hits their pages receive, the more notice the search engines will be taking of you, and the higher you will go on their pages as well. The keywords you associate with your advert will play a part here. It should all add up to more exposure and more business.

For website and blog owners, being an affiliate becomes an additional source of income.

The higher the hit rate, the more the advertisers will be prepared to pay. Payment arrangements vary. As an affiliate, you might be paid per click; that is every time someone clicks on the advert to get more information. Or you could be paid per thousand, per action or per lead. Being paid per thousand means the advert must be clicked a thousand times. Being paid per action refers to a reader doing something suggested by the advert. If the action has to be one that generates a lead for the advertiser, that is being paid per lead. Another type of network will auction your slot and pay you per day from the highest bid. You could even join a program that pays a substantial commission for each sale that originates from a click on your page.

You can be paid for doing nothing more than hosting adverts on your pages. But if you are wise, you’ll put in a little more effort to maximize the income generation. Having more than one site, and filling more than one niche, means that you can be host to many more adverts. Regularly updating your content will keep your audience coming back for more, and generate more hits. If you research the product or services you are promoting, you can make your content relevant to it and direct your readers to the advert.

Some networks will select adverts for you; some will ask you to agree to those selected or bidding for your space; others will simply be facilitators and parade businesses seeking slots so you can select the most appropriate, make contact and agree on whether and how to become affiliated. You need to research the networks, so you can choose the ones that suit you best and give you the level of involvement you want.

Traffic is king in these circumstances so use whatever means you can to promote your site and drive more traffic to it. It’s a good idea to contact your followers with regular email newsletters. Adverts can go into these too. Keep chasing incoming links. Lots of people seek reciprocal links, which can go to different sites belonging to the same webmaster. Don’t forget to link out to your own other sites as well.

You can also earn commission from networks for referrals. If you know of another site that could benefit from the same program, don’t hesitate to recommend it and offer an affiliate link from which you would benefit.

The networks might be businesses set up for the purpose from scratch, or they could be additional services to generate another income stream and supplement an existing business. Google’s Adsense and Yahoo are examples that come to mind.

The success of the networks depends on the success of their clients’ marketing programs, which depends on the success of the adverts on the pages and emails of their affiliates. If everyone does their bit, there is benefit in it for all.
